Advice from Ricardo Almeida

Ricardo Almeida is a Renzo black belt and a super nice guy. He was recently on the MMA.TV forum answering questions about bjj, life, mma and more. I was really impressed by his insights and kind words. One comment really stood out for me:
"I firmly believe that teaching is the best way to learn. I feel my technique has gotten smoother and I move more effortlessly, and I attribute that to the time I have spent teaching and coaching." - Ricardo Almeida
Dave Camarillo told me this same thing years ago and I have found it personally true in training at our club. If you teach, you have to not only understand the details, but be aware of how others do the move, the issues they face, and the whys of what makes a move tick. So the next time you are in class working with your partner, take your time to help them out - and if someone tries to explain something to you, be open, check your ego, and listen. We have opportunities to coach each other every day on the mat - use this time wisely. If you do, everyone benefits.
See you on the mat.
